Eye Stye - What is Eye Stye ?


What is Eye Stye ?

Eye Stye may begin at any age. Eye Stye can affect healthy people, or it can be associated with medical problems. Some cases are genetically inherited. A stye initially brings pain, redness, tenderness and swelling in the area, then a small pimple appears. An Eyes Stye develops in 3 to 7 days; usually fills with pus then burst spontaneously healing on their own when the infection drains. Pain and swelling subsides when the pressure is relieved. Stye has all the the signs of inflammation, swelling, redness, pain and heat or warmth and occurs on the edge of the eyelid. An Eye stye occurs when staphylococcal bacteria infect one of the tiny glands at the base of the eyelid hairs and then becomes inflamed.

What are the symptom of eye stye?

  • Tenderness and pain are usually the first symptoms of a stye
  • Redness of eyes
  • Swelling of entire eye lid
  • Discharge of thick pus fron styes
  • Itching or burning of eyes

Causes of Eye Stye

The cause of the Eye Stye is staphylococcal bacteria.

Eye Stye Treatment - Some Remedies for treating Stye

  • Use a grated potato as a poultice to reduce swelling in inflamed eyes.
  • Apply hot compresses for 10 to 15 minutes, three or four times a day over the course of several days. This will relieve the pain and bring the stye to a head, much like a pimple. The stye ruptures and drains, then heals.
  • The use of clove. This spice should be rubbed in water and applied over the stye . This will give relief from the stye. Helps to get rid of a stye.
  • Hot compress should be applied to the affected eye three or four times a day.
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric in 2 cups of water until it reduces in half. Cool and strain 4-5 times through a fine muslin. Apply as eye drops 3-4 times a day.
  • Do not squeeze a stye as it could push bacteria in the blood stream
